Story

Asra Panahi, an Iranian teenager of Azeri ethnicity, was born on March 5, 2007, in Ardabil, Iran. She was a talented swimmer, achieving third place (bronze) in both 50m and 100m freestyle swimming at the Azerbaijan Cup 2017 (held in November 2018) in the 11-12 age group. She also secured third place in the team freestyle swimming for the same age group. In 2017, she was recognized as the top swimmer in the under-12 age group in East Azarbaijan province's women's swimming league. In September 2018, representing East Azarbaijan Province, she placed sixth nationally in the 50-meter backstroke at the Olympiad of Iran's best swimming talents for the 13-14 age group.

On October 12, 2022, Asra Panahi was killed at the age of 15 during the Mahsa Amini protests in Ardabil. The incident occurred at Shahed Girls High School when school officials attempted to compel students to participate in a pro-government demonstration and sing the "Salam Farmandeh" song, which praises Ali Khamenei. Panahi and other students reportedly refused to comply, protesting the killing of Mahsa Amini, the government, and mandatory hijab. According to a parent, teachers and students chanted "death to the dictator." Plainclothes security forces were then summoned by school officials, who reportedly attacked the students, beating them and arresting ten girls. Asra Panahi was among twelve students taken to Fatemi Hospital, where she died from severe injuries, including internal bleeding.

Her death sparked widespread demonstrations, particularly in Ardabil, with protesters demanding an end to the Islamic Republic. Iranian officials and state media disputed the circumstances of her death, claiming she had a congenital heart condition or died by suicide, similar to narratives used for other victims. An interview with a masked man, identified as Panahi's uncle, was aired on state television, asserting her death was due to a heart problem and unrelated to any protests. However, the Coordinating Council of Trade Union Organizations of Iranian Educators initially reported her death resulted from the security forces' attack, though they later amended their statement, saying they could neither confirm nor deny it. Former Iranian football player Ali Daei condemned the attack on students in Ardabil, stating, "Silence caused by the government's pressure against the protests... has the price of death and every day puts another heat in the heart of Iran, which is a betrayal of humanity and my country."
